125 Years of Klio-Eterna

01.01.2025

Our history: How a vision from 1900 became a company with a bright future.

2025 is a very special year for us, as we will be celebrating our 125th anniversary!

Our company history began on March 15, 1900, when Eduard Reisert founded the brand Klio in Hennef, Germany. His goal was to market the fountain pens he had patented in 1895. This marked the beginning of what Klio‑Eterna still stands for today: high‑quality writing instruments made in Germany.

From Fountain Pens to the Eterna Ballpoint Mechanism

A major milestone followed 55 years later, when the Eterna ballpoint pen mechanism was officially certified. This innovation expanded our product range and shaped the future of our brand.

Shortly after, the company was divided. Our long‑time authorized officer Wilhelm Höhner took over half of the business and established Klio‑Eterna as an independent company in Wolfach, where we continue to manufacture with passion and precision.

Growth, Production Expansion and Promotional Printing

In 1962, we began offering promotional printing, gradually expanding all production departments. Over the decades, Klio‑Eterna evolved into one of Germany’s leading manufacturers of customizable promotional writing instruments.

Technological Progress and In‑House Refill Production

When Hans Michael Höhner took over in 1986, we launched our own refill production. This strengthened our independence and ensured consistent product quality. In 2014, this development led to the creation of our Silktech refills, known for their exceptionally smooth writing performance.

Modern Leadership and a Strong Commitment to Sustainability

Since 2017, Klio‑Eterna has been led by Höhner's spouse Edeltraud Syllwasschy and former injection‑molding manager Michael Gleich. Together, they are driving the company’s modernization with a clear focus on sustainability and resource‑efficient production.

With our innovative material “bio + wood”, which is 100% free from fossil plastics and microplastics, we have taken an important step toward environmentally friendly writing instruments. And we continue to research new sustainable solutions for the future.
