125 Years of Klio-Eterna

01.01.2025

Our history: How a vision from 1900 became a company with a bright future.

2025 is a very special year for us, as we will be celebrating our 125th anniversary!

We were founded on 15 March 1900 by Eduard Reisert under the name Klio in Hennef, Rhineland, to sell his fountain pen, which had been patented in 1895. It was not until 55 years after the company was founded that the Eterna ballpoint pen mechanism was notarised, and ballpoint pens were added to the range. When the company was split the following year, half of it went to the long-standing authorised signatory Wilhelm Höhner, who turned it into today’s Klio-Eterna Schreibgeräte GmbH & Co KG as a legally and economically independent company in Wolfach. In 1962, Klio-Eterna began promotional printing and continued to expand all its departments over the years. In 1986, Hans Michael Höhner took over from his father and introduced in-house refill production, from which our Silktech refills emerged in 2014. Since 2017, the company has been run by Höhner’s partner, Edeltraud Syllwasschy, and the former head of the injection moulding department, Michael Gleich. There are many plans for the future, with ongoing research particularly focused on sustainability. We have made a good start with our new ‘bio + wood’ material, which is 100% free from fossil-based plastics and microplastics.
